On February 27, 2024, The Alliance AFSCME- SEIU Local 888 reached a Tentative Agreement with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a three-year contract for the members of Unit 2. This deal would run from July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2027.

Last week, the Boston City Council Committee on City Services & Innovation Technology held a hearing on all to frequent verbal and physical attacks AFSCME Boston Transportation Department members in Locals 783, 804, 1631, and 1892 face while doing their jobs enforcing the city’s parking regulations.

This morning AFSCME Council 93 Unit 2 Locals reached a Tentative Agreement with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a new 3-year contract for members working for the Departments of Developmental Services, Mental Health, Public Health and Youth Services, employees of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and other Massachusetts state workers. In total, approximately 8,000 state workers would be impacted by this contract.

The public sector has finally recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of last year, there were 22,000 more public service jobs in the nation than in February 2020, just before the pandemic started.

This is cause for celebration for everyone in our communities, but especially for workers of color, who have been historically overrepresented in state and local government jobs.

Connecticut Rep. Jahana Hayes recently introduced a resolution calling on Congress to affirm its support for providing living wages, good benefits and fair working conditions to paraeducators, classroom assistants, bus drivers, custodial workers and others who are vital to our public education system.

“This afternoon, AFSCME Council 93 Boston Citywide members ratified a four-year contract that will provide significant base wage gains, more flexible working conditions and scheduling, increased time off, and more, with no major givebacks from the Union!

These front-line workers provide the basic, and often unheralded, city services we all rely on and are deserving of a contract that recognizes and values their work that helps make Boston the world-class city it is today.

AFSCME’s “I AM Story” podcast has received a nomination for an NAACP Image Award in the “Outstanding Podcast – Limited Series/Short Form” category.
