AFSCME Florida Statement on Recertification Win in Town of Surfside
Today the hardworking men and women represented by AFSCME in the Town of Surfside voted 89% in favor of re-certifying their union. AFSCME Local 929, representing the public service workers for the town will continue to ensure these dedicated workers have a protected voice in the services they deliver.
AFSCME Florida Administrator James Spears, Jr. released the following statement:
“These workers only recently ratified their first contract and became some of the newest AFSCME members in the state so there was never a doubt that they want a union voice on the job. No amount of legislative tricks, traps or misdirection that will stop them from continuing to build their union, ratify fair contracts and deliver the services that the taxpayers, visitors and business of Surfside deserve. Tonight’s vote shows that is what these workers want, and they know that is what a union through AFSCME will deliver for years to come.”
AFSCME Local 929 President Willie Perez, a code compliance officer with the Town of Surfside added:
“When we come together like a tight clenched fist we show the strength of our unity. We are one."
