DESCRIPTION:From the WSLC:\n\nWSLC convention goes virtual Sept. 23-25\n\nS
ubmit resolutions now to set priorities of state’s largest union organizat
 ion\n\n(July 16\, 2020) — The Washington State Labor Council\, AFL-CIO wil
l be conducting its 2020 Constitutional Convention via the Zoom video conf
erence on Sept. 23-25. The convention had previously been scheduled to tak
e place in July in Wenatchee but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemi
c.\n\nThe theme of this year’s WSLC convention will be “Justice\, Democrac
y and Our Unions.” It will feature distinguished speakers and breakout wor
kshops on racial and economic justice amid the pandemic\, and how we can t
ransform our unions to meet those challenges. It will also address the imp
ortance of the 2020 elections in achieving that justice. The 2020 WSLC Con
vention will convene at 5 p.m. on Wednesday\, Sept. 23\, will continue at
 5 p.m. on Thursday\, Sept. 24\, and resume at 9 a.m. on Friday\, Sept. 25.
Convention business is expected to conclude by the end of the day Friday.
\n\n“This is a critical time for working families in our state and the nat
ion\,” said WSLC President Larry Brown. “Many of us are feeling angry\, fr
ustrated\, grief stricken\, and anxious in this moment. It can be overwhel
ming and leave us feeling isolated and powerless. But we can use these emo
tions as bricks — material we use to build a better labor movement that de
mands racial and economic justice for all. This convention is an opportuni
ty to turn the rage\, sadness\, and anxiety we share into a collective voi
ce that cannot be silenced. That’s why we are urging all of our affiliated
unions to send a full delegation to our convention to guide this importan
t work.”\n\nAll WSLC-affiliated unions have been sent a Convention Call in
dicating their voting strength and the number of delegates they can appoin
 t. Delegates must be members of the union they are representing. Rank-and-
file members who wish to represent their union as delegates should contact
their local union for more information about how to serve in this role. A
ll will receive trainings and step-by-step instructions from the WSLC on h
ow to participate via Zoom.\n\nHere’s what else you need to know:\n\nRESOL
UTIONS — As always\, 2020 WSLC Convention delegates will consider resoluti
ons that are a key part not just of the WSLC Convention\, but of the organ
ization itself. It is through the debate and passage of these resolutions
that WSLC positions and policies are established. (See theresolutions appr
oved in 2019 for examples.) In addition\, because 2020 is a Constitutional
Convention\, delegates will also have the opportunity to amend the WSLC C
onstitution to ensure it aligns with the organization’s values. Any WSLC-a
ffiliated union may submit resolutions. The WSLC is accepting resolutions
submitted via email only this year.\n\nProposed resolutions should be emai
led (preferably in Word format) to Richard Cox at rcox@wslc.org no later t
han Aug. 23. Copies of the proposed resolutions will be emailed to all reg
istered delegates by Sept. 8. Please contact Richard with any questions ab
out resolutions for the 2020 Convention.\n\nENDORSEMENTS — Convention dele
gates will also be considering post-primary election endorsements to suppl
ement those already made by the WSLC. A two-thirds majority vote is necess
ary for endorsement. Participants in the WSLC political endorsement (COPE)
conventions held earlier this year will be familiar with the format and p
rocedures of this interactive virtual convention.\n\nCOMMITTEES — Delegate
s are invited to participate in convention committees\, which will meet on
Thursday and Friday. These committees include the Constitutional\, Labels
& Unfair Lists\, Legislative and Resolutions committees\, which will cons
ider amendments and make recommendations to the full convention regarding
proposed resolutions referred to each panel. Other committees are COPE But
 tons\, Credentials\, Grievance\, Rules & Order of Business\, and Sergeant-
at-Arms. The normal duties of these committees will be adapted for this ye
ar’s virtual convention.\n\nAWARDS — Each year at convention\, the WSLC pr
esents awards recognizing the accomplishments of specific union organizati
ons and individual union members. They are the Bruce Brennan Award for fur
thering the cause of apprenticeship\, education and training\; the Elsie S
chrader Award for the advancement of women in leadership roles and/or for
activism on behalf of women within the labor movement\; and the Mother Jon
es award to the individual and organization that best exemplify the tradit
ion of Mary “Mother” Jones’ immortal statement\, “Mourn for the dead\, but
fight like hell for the living!”\n\nClick here for more information about
how to nominate a union member or organization for these awards.\n\nShort

DESCRIPTION:There is no workforce in the state of Washington that has more
at stake in decisions made by the Legislature.  The Legislature has contro
l over our wages\, benefits\, and pensions. They adopt a state budget that
determines the funding level for the services we provide.  Every year the
y consider countless bills that can have an impact on everything from our
working conditions to our job security.\n\nAs individuals we are powerless
\, but through the union we have a voice.  WFSE has the most vibrant membe
r lobbying program in the state.  Every year hundreds of WFSE members trav
el to Olympia and speak directly with their representatives.  Nobody knows
better than we do about the importance of the services we provide\, and n
obody can advocate better for us than we do.  Together\, we make a real di
fference.\n\nWe are the experts. We can tell the story about how we serve
the public everyday\, about the resources we need to be able to provide th
ese critical services\, and about the importance of being able to recruit
and retain high-quality workforce.  Lobby training is a fun way to learn h
ow to get engaged and be an effective advocate for the public\, our famili
es and for ourselves.\n\nJoin us!\n\nSouth Seattle Community College\, Geo
