We are AFSCME Local 420
We represent a wide range of non-technical medical workers employed in the New York City Health+Hospitals system; as well as employees in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the NYC Department of Corrections and the NYC Fire Department.
Our primary mandate involves negotiating unit contracts, benefits and opportunities for advancement, as well as ensuring respect and dignity on the job for approx. 9,000 members employed in 16 acute hospitals, 5 long-term care facilities, 5 diagnostic health centers and over 500 community and school-based clinics spread throughout the five boroughs. Our members also work as service aides at the Rikers Island Prison Complex; as technicians in the city's morgues; and as service aides with NYC's Bravest.
Local 420 is one of the 5% Locals in District Council 37 and the leading force in the Council’s organizing efforts in the health sector. We continue to fight for fair wages, better working conditions and benefits, and to ensure workers’ rights are upheld. While our primary focus is ensuring our member are treated with dignity in the workplace, w strongly advocate on behalf of the patients we serve.
Local 420 is a growing union. At its peak, it served over 10,000 members. With high attrition, downsizing and outsourcing throughout the city, this number has fallen as low as 8,500 members. However, new trends and changes in city and state laws, as well as new administration at Health+Hospitals have resulted in an influx of new hires. As such, we anticipate a surge in membership.
