2019 Convention Nominees

President

Nominee: Luther Elmore has served on the board for the past two years. He retired from the Texas General Services Commission in 2002, lives in Austin, and has been an AFSCME member for thirteen years.

Vice-President

Nominee: Maura Powers has served as President for the past six years and was Vice-President the year before that.  She retired from the Texas Attorney General’s Office in 2008, lives in Austin, and has been an AFSCME member for eleven years.

 

Recording Secretary

Nominee: Peggy Seely has served as the Recording Secretary for the past five years, after serving two years as a board member.  She retired from the Texas Department on Aging (now part of the Health and Human Services Commission) in 1997, lives in Austin, and has been an AFSCME member for seven years.

Secretary-Treasurer

Nominee: Joe Thrash is running for the Board for the first time. He has previously served on the Nominations Committee. Joe retired from the Attorney General's Office in 2016 after forty-two years with the State of Texas. He lives in Austin and has been a member of AFSCME for five years.

 Board Member (1)

Nominee: Don Crowder has served as the Vice-President for the past six years and was a board member the year before that.  He retired from the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (now part of the Health and Human Services Commission) in 2002, lives in Austin, and has been an AFSCME member for fifteen years.

Board Member (2)

Nominee: Dick Lavine has served on the board for the past six years.  He retired from the House Research Organization at the Texas House of Representatives in 1994 and lives in Austin. He has been an AFSCME member for eleven years.

Board Member (3)

Nominee: Dorothy Parker has served on the board for the past seven years. She retired from the Texas Workforce Commission (now part of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission) in 1999 while living in Grand Prairie. She has been an AFSCME member for ten years.

Board Member (4)

Nominee: Sandra Smith is running for the Board for the first time. She worked at several state agencies, including the Comptroller’s Office, and retired from the Texas Education Agency in 2010 while living in San Antonio, Texas. She has been an AFSCME member for eight years.

 Board Member (5)

Nominee: Josie Soto has served on the board for the past seven years. She retired from the Texas Lottery Commission in 2003 and lives in Brownsville. She has been an AFSCME member for twelve years.

 Place 1

Nominee: Angela Crowder has served as a trustee since 2016. She retired from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 2012. She lives in Austin and has been an AFSCME member for ten years.

 Place 2

Nominee: Cynthia Hayes has served as a board member since 2013. She retired from the State Office of Administrative Hearings in 2001. She lives in Austin and has been an AFSCME member for six years.

 Place 3

Nominee: Joe Seely has served as the Treasurer for the past six years and was a trustee the year before that.  He retired from the City of Austin and was eligible for membership because his wife is a retired state employee. He lives in Austin and has been an AFSCME member for nineteen years.
