District Council 37 Retirees Chapter Administratorship

Reforming the state's pension system is critical for the state, local governments, school districts, and transportation systems to recruit and retain employees.
We're excited to share details about our Spring 2024 Retirees education program, brought to you through a Partnership with the DC 37 Education Department and the DC 37 Retirees Association. This program offers a variety of enriching experiences in education, recreation, and social engagement tailored for retirees like you. There's something to suit everyone's interests: health and fitness, history, computer/digital skills and language classes.
An administratorship is a process established under Article IX of the International Constitution, under which the International President is authorized to appoint representatives to assume responsibility for the day-to-day affairs of an affiliate when the affiliate is found to have violated the International Constitution. Under this provision, he may appoint administrators to carry out these responsibilities on his behalf.

The power of well-structured and meaningful “Stories!”
They serve both to “dispossess and to malign” as well as “to empower, and to humanize.”
“Stories can break the dignity of a people. But Stories can also repair that broken dignity.”

The SOMOS 2023 Conference took place, as is customary, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Nov. 8-11. The well-attended event drew 2,300 people, a record number. Among the attendees were NYS elected and appointed officials, members of various community/labor organizations, and officers and members of the DC 37 Retirees Association.

As the year comes to a close, I am celebrating the incredible surge of worker activism in 2023. Current and future members of AFSCME and many other unions were in the streets, on the picket lines, and at the bargaining table demanding fairness and respect. I want to also take a moment to recognize and celebrate some of the most inspiring activists in our AFSCME family: AFSCME retirees.

AFSCME supports a proposal in Congress to ease the financial burden on child care professionals who provide meals and snacks.

Our union applauds the nomination of longtime Service Employees International Union (SEIU) lawyer, Nicole Berner, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

A recent Treasury Department report titled, “Labor Unions and the Middle Class,” was the subject of a conversation at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) that highlighted the role of unions in making the economy stronger.
