WE ARE AFSCME
Council 17
We are men and women who work for the State of Louisiana and the State of Arkansas. We’re part of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Council 17.
AFSCME is one of the country's largest labor unions, with 1.6 million members in nearly every state. AFSCME members provide many of the services that our communities need every day: maintaining our highways and streets; providing care to the elderly and people with mental illnesses; protecting the safety and purity of our drinking water; running our correctional facilities; aiding neglected and abused children; and more.
We joined our union because we needed a way to make our voices stronger for quality public services and fairness on the job. We’ve already achieved more together than any one of us could have done alone, but we have a long way to go.
We are proud of our work serving the public. We are a member-run union fighting to ensure that our state, parishes, and cities provide quality public services while treating us fairly; for a fair tax system to make sure the funds are there for these services; to protect anyone on the job whose rights are violated; and for the regular raises that we need and deserve.
