Seeking OCME member to serve as VP!

We are seeking to meet with OCME members who may be interested in serving as Vice President of Local 3005. If you are curious, check out the description of the position below and email Meghan ([email protected]) to set up a time to discuss this further with Local 3005 leadership

You do not need to have any prior experience in labor organizing, but a strong desire to work as a team with the current leadership group is highly valued. Don’t be intimidated by the Vice President title – if you are at all interested, email Meghan!

Description of 3005 VP Position

The 3005 VP shall do the following, with the support of the rest of the 3005 executive board (Eboard):

Description from Local 3005 Constitution (Article VII, Section 2):

The Vice President shall: 

  1. Assist the President in the work of their office. In the absence of the president and/or their ability to serve, the vice-president shall preside at all meetings and perform all duties otherwise performed by the president
  2. May, with the approval of the local executive board, be authorized to act as co-signer of checks drawn on local funds in place of either the president or the treasurer
  3. Is responsible for coordinating contract administration within this local; 
  4. Serve as a delegate to DC 37, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, and New York State AFL-CIO, representing this local at any conventions or meetings as appropriate or needed 

Informal Description: 

  • Assist the 3005 president in their duties.
    • Preside at meetings and perform the president’s duties when the president is absent or unable to serve
    • Meet with the president at a mutually agreed upon frequency to resolve grievances and member concerns, prepare for meetings, among other matters
  • Participate actively in Local meetings.
    • Attend general membership meetings of 3005, Eboard meetings, and delegate meetings if needed
    • Be an integral part of Eboard meeting, including assisting with agenda setting and facilitation 
  • Take steps to improve the Local.
    • Develop a working knowledge of the 3005 and DC37 constitutions, the three contracts that apply to 3005 members, DC37 organizational structure, and Roberts Rules of Order
    • Assist with coordinating contract administration within the local
    • Serve as a delegate to DC37, AFSCME, AFL-CIO and NYS AFL-CIO as needed
    • Support union democracy and proactive member engagement
    • Be willing to:
      • Attend trainings to develop labor-related skills and knowledge
      • Support union building activities, such as welcoming new members, recruiting volunteers for committee tasks, exploring opportunities to increase member participation, and political action 
  • Support the membership. 
    • Maintain professional, positive, and polite relationships with members of both DOHMH and OCME, and members of different titles and demographic characteristics
    • Stay organized, document work, and keep track of conversations to keep other eboard members in the loop and to move the work forward in a timely manner
